My Media and Kaltura
You can create your own videos within Canvas, and the My Media tool can be used for this purpose. Think of My Media as your own personal media (audio and video) library. You can upload media you have already or create new media using Kaltura (the software application that is used within My Media), GoReact, YouTube, Vimeo, Screencastomatic, etc.
We also recommend using My Media because audio and video files can be quite large and take up lots of storage. The storage limits for My Media are much larger than the limits for your files in Canvas. Creating media in My Media rather than uploading media to your Files folder helps to free up storage space.
You can create media content with Kaltura in various ways, including:
- Record a webcam video of yourself.
- Record a screencast of your computer screen. This is helpful if you want to record your voice while showing something on your screen, such as a PowerPoint presentation.
- Record a screencast of your computer screen while also recording webcam video of yourself talking. The webcam video displays in the corner of the screencast video.
- Record audio of yourself.
In short, you can use Kaltura’s recording options to create a variety of instructional materials for your students. Just about anything that you might want to say or show your students in a face-to-face setting, you can do with Kaltura. This tool also has basic editing options so that you can clean up any mistakes in your recordings.
Please note: there are two versions of Kaltura available in My Media: Kaltura Capture is downloaded and installed locally, and Express Capture works from within the browser window. The videos below the 'view' icon provide detailed information on installing and creating videos using the downloaded version. The article that immediately follows will provide you the basic information you need to create a quick video using the browser version (Webcam and Audio only. No Screen Capture features available in this version):
