Remote Teaching vs. Online Teaching
Definitions
In much of the conversation about online teaching, the terms remote teaching and online teaching have been used interchangeably. However, SLCC has chosen to differentiate the two in the following ways:
- Remote teaching means using web conferencing software to meet with students virtually at scheduled times each week (more on web conferencing software can be found here Links to an external site..) and all of the assignments and tests are housed in Canvas. In the SLCC class schedule, these remote courses are designated with the “Broadcast/Internet Lecture” course type. In many ways, these can be quite like face-to-face courses, but you are just using a different tool to meet with your students and complete assignments.
- Online teaching is a fully asynchronous course that uses Canvas or tools attached to Canvas to deliver all of the course content without any specific dates or times at which you are required to meet. In the SLCC class schedule, these online courses are designated with the “Online” course type.
In this guide, a lot of the information is focused on getting remote instructors up and running. Some of the information will be more helpful for online instructors. You are encouraged to read through the entire guide and take from it what you can use no matter what kind of instruction you find yourself doing this semester.
