This welcome announcement simply tells students what they need to do to get started at the beginning of the semester.
Welcome Announcement:
Welcome to Math 1030! I am looking forward to being your instructor for the upcoming term. A few items I want to make you aware of as you start the class: the Orientation module must be completed before you can begin working on the rest of the course material. In the orientation module you can find the syllabus with all of the information regarding grades, due dates, class expectations, and how to navigate within this course. Each week you should complete one module. Homework assignments and discussions should be completed by Saturday at 11:59 pm each week. Discussions require you to respond to at least two of your classmates. These responses are due each Monday by 11:59 pm.
Example 2: Marisa Maughan
This announcement is also clear and gives students specific things to do as they get started.
Welcome Announcement:
Greetings students! Welcome to Anthropology 1020! I hope you're all as happy about Spring semester starting as I am! Hopefully right? :D This week we'll be taking it pretty easy as you acquaint yourself with the course, your classmates and your instructor. Do be prepared for the tempo to amp up come next Monday.
So what do I have in store for you this week? Well, let's take a look...
- You should familiarize yourself with the layout and design of the class (how do I check on the due date, where do I find additional readings, etc.)
- Now is the time to explore and practice how you'll be turning in assignments, contributing to discussions and uploading video recordings.
- You should purchase your textbook (electronic version or hard copy). I do link to the electronic copy in Canvas, but this is not required. You also do not need to purchase MindTap if you don't want to.
- Review the syllabus video. I will reference it often!
- Complete the course orientation by Sunday. Keep in mind, you cannot move on to the other modules until you have completed the course overview, so make this a priority.
If you have any questions about the flow of the course, please feel free to post them here or email me. I look forward to getting to know all of you!
Example 3: Stephen Haslam
This announcement is about an extra credit assignment that the faculty takes time to clearly explain.
RE: Extra Credit Opportunities
Hey Folks,
Many of you have asked about extra credit opportunities in this class. I wanted to give you a couple options that are related to the presentation aspect of the course.
1. Speakers’ Showcase
Each semester I have special opportunity to choose one of you to represent our class at the Speakers’ Showcase. All communications professors can nominate one student to submit their best speech. If you are nominated you will receive extra credit. In addition, a panel of judges will choose the top six presentations to be in the Showcase. If you are chosen to be in the Showcase, you will receive additional extra credit and possibly money or prizes. This is a win-win! The next showcase is April 26th. Your presentation videos will be due April 17th.
2. Poetry Slam
Most of you know by now that I teach and coach poetry slam. While this isn’t an English or creative writing class, writing is communication, poetry is the written expression of thoughts, feelings, and moments, and performance poetry is a great art form for practicing public speaking and speech anxiety management. There are a number of local poetry slams held at coffee shops, restaurants, and other venues each month. Students may receive a small portion of extra credit for attending and reviewing slam poem presentations, or more extra credit for writing, memorizing, presenting and competing. Please email me at stephen.haslam@jordandistrict.org or message me on Canvas if you have questions.
Example 4: (Anonymous)
Notice in particular the mid-semester announcement that goes over an area of confusion for students, and so the faculty points them in the right direction.
Welcome Announcement:
Welcome to Fitness for Life! I am so glad you have decided to take this course. Please be sure to start with the Course Orientation module to begin. This will clarify and hopefully get us all started on the right foot. Take some time to go through the syllabus and due dates as well. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me with any questions or concerns you might have. Here’s to a great semester!
Weekly Announcement:
Hi all, this is a reminder that all Module 8 assignments are due this Saturday by midnight. This includes quizzes, assignments and discussion board topics under Nutrition, Health, and Fitness. There has been some confusion on quiz question number 2 but this answer can be found in full in our book, “Total Fitness and Wellness,” brief 5th edition by Powers, Dodd and Jackson on page 78. Be sure you are reading the book carefully to find answers to the quizzes and application to assignments.
Keep in mind, I do not accept late work so be diligent and aware of your time. If there is an issue that is impeding your work, please keep open communication with me so I can accommodate you to the best of my ability.
As always, thank you for your hard work and diligence in this course. Keep up the great work and have a healthy day!

This announcement briefly goes over the previous week's and next week's assignment. It's a great example of the type of announcement to send out on a weekly basis.
Weekly Announcement:
We are halfway done! I am enjoying reading the discussions and how well everyone is participating. We recently had the Growth Models Written Assignment due. I noticed that several of you just provided the solution without showing your work or explaining how you came up with the equation. Remember to read directions carefully as some assignments ask for just the answer while others require you to show detailed work.
Next week we will begin working on the finance project. This requires a bit more effort than the previous projects so make sure you look over the requirements at the beginning of the week.
