Before you begin learning about genderlect theory, let’s have you do a self-assessment to see which style of communication you use most often. You will not be graded on how you answer the questions; you get full credit for simply taking it. Answer each question as honestly as possible and when you are through, follow the directions in the last section of the survey to tally your scores.

Now that you’re finished the Conversation Style Self-Assessment, count how many times you chose the left column. Count how many times you chose the right column. The answers in the left column show your tendencies for Report Conversation Style (male). The answers in the right column reflect your tendencies for Rapport Conversation Style (female). Which style do you identify with the most?

Conversation style can make all the difference in whether you are heard or understood. What do I mean by “conversation style?” Lets take a look at Genderlect Theory to find out.
