Course Types at SLCC

 Course Types at SLCC

First, let's clarify what we mean when we say a course is online and how that differs from other types of courses. Salt Lake Community College offers many different types of courses that you'll see in the schedule when you register for classes. Three of the most common are: online, hybrid, and lecture.

Online Courses

In online courses, all the instruction is done over the internet rather than in a classroom. These courses are delivered through a learning platform called Canvas (just like this guide you’re in now is in Canvas); think of it as your "virtual classroom." It is a space where you can interact with your peers and professor and submit assignments.

You will need reliable access to the internet in order to complete your online courses, and you may be required to go to a testing center in your area for some exams.

While most online courses have regular due dates throughout the semester, you may find online courses beneficial because you can learn from anywhere at any time and access the materials multiple times, while still having online interactions with your professors and other students.

Livestream Courses

Though these livestream courses are also delivered over the internet like online courses, they are different than online courses. They require meeting virtually as a class at a specific time using web conferencing tools such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams. You will complete most, if not all, course assignments in Canvas.

Hybrid Courses

Hybrid courses are a combination of classroom learning and online learning. You will complete some course activities in Canvas and some in a classroom. The classroom time commitment will vary from course to course.

Some students find hybrid courses beneficial if they like to have some in-person communication with the professor or other students but still need some flexibility in when and where they learn.

Lecture/Face-to-Face (F2F)

Lecture, or face-to-face (F2F) courses are delivered in person and on campus at a specific time and place. These courses will use Canvas to provide some course information and grades, but most of the material is presented in class.
